Active Recall vs Re-Reading: Why Testing Yourself Wins

Re-reading and highlighting feel productive but barely move the needle. Active recall — testing yourself — is the study method the evidence actually supports. Here's why, and how to use it.

Here's an uncomfortable fact about the way most people study: re-reading your notes is one of the least effective study techniques ever measured — and it's also the most popular one.

In classic experiments comparing groups who re-studied material against groups who were tested on it, the tested groups consistently remembered substantially more days and weeks later — even when the re-studying groups spent more time with the material. “But re-reading feels better”

It does — and that's the trap. Re-reading is smooth; retrieval is effortful. Students consistently predict they'll learn more from re-studying, and consistently perform better after testing. Your sense of fluency while studying is simply not a reliable signal of learning. Trust the method, not the feeling.
