How the Spaced Repetition Algorithm Works (Explained Simply)

Spaced repetition is the most evidence-backed way to memorize anything. Here's how the algorithm actually decides when you see each flashcard — explained without jargon.

You study a chapter, feel confident, and a week later it's mostly gone. That's not a personal failing — it's how human memory works. In the 1880s, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus measured how quickly we forget new information and drew what's now called the forgetting curve: memory drops off a cliff in the first days after learning, then decays more slowly.

The spaced repetition algorithm is the direct counterattack. Instead of reviewing everything all the time (exhausting) or nothing until the exam (disastrous), it schedules each piece of information for review at the moment you're about to forget it. The core idea: review right before you forget

Every time you successfully recall something, two things happen:

  • The memory gets stronger.
  • The forgetting curve for that memory gets flatter — it now decays more slowly.

That second effect is the magic. If you recall a fact after 1 day, you might safely wait 3 days before the next review. Recall it again, and you can wait a week. Then a month. Each successful recall buys you exponentially more time.

1. Every card has an interval

The interval is how long the app waits before showing you that card again. New cards start with a tiny interval (minutes to a day). 3. Each card learns its own difficulty

The algorithm also tracks an ease factor per card. Cards you repeatedly rate "Hard" get a lower ease factor, so their intervals grow more cautiously. Cards you breeze through grow faster. Over time, every card settles into its own personal rhythm — which is why honest ratings matter more than optimistic ones.

Why this beats cramming (with the math)

Say you're learning 500 facts for an exam in three months.

  • Cramming: you review all 500 facts in the last week. Most were learned once, months ago, and have decayed to near zero. You're effectively re-learning from scratch, under stress.
  • Spaced repetition: each fact gets reviewed on its own schedule — maybe 5–7 total reviews spread over the three months. Because reviews land right before forgetting, each one takes seconds. Spaced repetition is a partnership. The algorithm handles the scheduling; you have to hold up two ends of the bargain:

Rate honestly

The single most common mistake is rating a card "Good" when you actually hesitated or half-guessed. That inflates the interval, and the card comes back after you've fully forgotten it. Be ruthless: if you wouldn't have gotten it on an exam, it's an "Again."

Show up (most) days

The schedule assumes you'll review cards when they come due. Skip a week and the due pile grows — not catastrophically, but enough to feel discouraging. A few minutes daily beats an hour weekly, every time. This is also why keeping your daily card count sustainable matters more than being ambitious.

Do you need to understand the math to benefit?

No — and that's rather the point.
