Understand first — derivation is insurance
A formula you can rebuild is a formula you cannot lose. Before carding F = ma or the quadratic formula, spend ten minutes on WHY it has that shape: what happens as mass grows, why the discriminant decides the number of roots. You don't need a full proof — a sense of "of course it looks like that" is the difference between recall and reconstruction-on-demand. The Feynman technique is the fastest route to that sense.
Card formulas in all three directions
- Forward: "What is the formula for kinetic energy?" → ½mv²
- Backward: "What does ½mv² compute?" — recognition of formulas in the wild is its own exam skill.
- Variables: "In PV = nRT, what is R and what are its units?" Half of formula errors are unit errors.
Add a fourth card for the conditions: "When does conservation of momentum apply?" Formulas fail exams most often by being used outside their domain.
Drill with numbers, not just symbols
A card that asks "KE of a 2 kg mass at 3 m/s?" forces you to USE the formula — retrieval plus application in one rep. Alternate symbolic cards with tiny numeric ones; the mix mirrors how exams probe (interleaving again).
