Interleaving: The Study Method That Feels Wrong and Works
Interleaving means mixing topics within one study session instead of finishing one before starting the next. It feels harder and messier — and it outperforms.
Interleaving is the practice of mixing different topics or problem types within a single study session — A, B, C, A, C, B — instead of finishing all of topic A before touching topic B. The blocked approach (AAA, BBB, CCC) feels cleaner, smoother, and more productive. The interleaved approach feels scattered and difficult. On delayed tests, interleaving wins — and often by a wide margin.
It's the rare study technique whose main obstacle is that it works while feeling like it isn't.
The evidence
The signature studies come from math practice. Rohrer and Taylor had students practice several types of geometry problems either blocked (all of one type, then the next) or interleaved (types shuffled together). During practice, the blocked group performed much better. On the test a week later, the interleaved group scored roughly twice as high. The pattern has since replicated across math skills, category learning (famously, identifying artists' painting styles), sports training, and medical diagnosis.
Notice the trap in that result: if you judge a study method by how practice feels, blocking looks superior every time. The benefit of interleaving only shows up later, on the test — which is the only place it matters.
Why mixing beats blocking
- You practice choosing the method, not just using it. In blocked practice, every problem in the set uses the strategy you just studied — so you never ask "what kind of problem is this?" Exams ask exactly that question, first, on every item.
- Contrast sharpens categories. Seeing similar-but-different problems side by side forces you to notice what actually distinguishes them — the discrimination that blocked practice never demands.
- Every switch is a retrieval. Returning to topic A after time on B means pulling A back from memory — a micro-dose of active recall and the spacing effect baked into the session structure.
How to interleave without making a mess
- Learn first, interleave second. Interleaving is for practice, not first contact. Get a basic grip on each topic before you start shuffling them.
- Mix related things. The technique shines on topics that are confusable with each other — integration methods, verb tenses, drug classes, artist styles. Mixing calculus with French vocabulary isn't interleaving; it's just a varied evening.
- Rotate in chunks, not chaos. A practical session: 15 minutes topic A, 15 topic B, 15 topic C, then a mixed problem set across all three.
- Expect to feel worse. More errors during practice, less flow. That's the desirable difficulty doing its work — hold the line until the test vindicates you.

Does interleaving work for memorization, or only problem-solving?
Both, with the biggest wins where items are easily confused — similar formulas, look-alike vocabulary, related diagnoses. For plain fact lists, the spacing and retrieval components carry most of the load.
How is interleaving different from spaced repetition?
Spacing distributes practice across time; interleaving distributes it across topics within a session. They're independent and stack — a spaced-repetition queue happens to deliver both at once.
Why does blocked practice feel so much better?
Fluency. Repeating one skill back-to-back gets smooth within minutes, and smoothness feels like learning. It's largely a short-term performance gain that evaporates by test day.
Should beginners interleave from day one?
No — build minimal competence in each topic first. Interleaving strengthens discrimination between things you partly know; it can overwhelm genuine first exposure.
