The Spacing Effect: Why Cramming Fades and Spacing Sticks

The spacing effect is the finding that spreading study over time beats massing it together — discovered in 1885 and confirmed ever since. Here's how to use it.

The spacing effect is one of the oldest and most robust findings in psychology: information studied in sessions spread over time is remembered far better than the same information studied in one concentrated block. Ten minutes today, ten tomorrow, and ten next week beats thirty minutes tonight — not by a little, but dramatically, and especially for anything you need to remember beyond this week.

Where it comes from

In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized thousands of nonsense syllables and meticulously tracked how quickly he forgot them — producing the famous forgetting curve, which shows memory decaying steeply at first and then flattening. Buried in the same work was the observation that re-learning material after a delay took less effort each time, and that spreading repetitions apart made memories last longer.

Modern research has confirmed it at scale. A 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues, covering hundreds of comparisons, found spaced practice reliably outperforming massed practice across verbal learning tasks — one of the reasons a major 2013 review of study techniques (Dunlosky et al.) rated distributed practice among the most effective techniques known, while highlighting and rereading rated among the least.

Why spacing works

  • Retrieval effort. After a gap, remembering takes work — and effortful retrieval strengthens memory far more than easy retrieval. This is the same engine behind active recall; spacing is what keeps the effort in it.
  • Consolidation. Memories reorganize and stabilize between sessions, particularly during sleep. Spacing gives that process multiple passes at the same material.
  • Interrupting fluency. Massed repetition makes material feel familiar within minutes, and familiarity shuts down deeper processing. A gap resets the difficulty to a productive level.

Spacing vs cramming, honestly

The catch is what happens after: crammed material collapses along the steep part of the forgetting curve, which is why you can pass a final in May and recognize almost nothing in September. Spaced material decays too — but from a higher base and far more slowly, and each review flattens the curve further.

What are the right gaps?

The research points to expanding intervals: review soon after first learning (within a day), then at growing gaps — roughly 1 day, 3 days, a week, two weeks, a month, with each successful recall pushing the next review further out and each failure pulling it back in. The optimal gap also scales with how long you need to remember: longer retention goals favor longer spacing.

Using the spacing effect this week

  1. Split, don't extend. Take the total time you'd study anyway and divide it across days. Three 20-minute sessions beat one hour-long session at no extra cost.
  2. Review before it's gone, not after. The ideal moment to revisit material is right before you'd forget it — hard on the edge of your memory, still reachable.
  3. Make the sessions retrieval, not rereading. Spacing multiplies active recall; it does much less for passive review.
  4. Keep daily volume sane. Spacing fails in practice when review piles up and you quit — how many flashcards per day covers sustainable numbers.
