Note-taking advice usually stops at the page layout, as if the right columns made knowledge permanent. The honest frame: notes are a capture tool, and capture is only half the job. Here's how the classic methods compare — and the after-step that makes any of them actually pay off.
The methods, honestly compared
Cornell method
Page split into notes, a cue column, and a summary row. Its quiet genius: the cue column is a built-in flashcard layer — cover the notes, answer from the cues. Best all-rounder for lectures, IF you actually do the cover-and-recall step (most students skip it).
Outline method
Hierarchical bullets — fast, familiar, great for structured lectures. Weakness: transcription mode. Typing an outline verbatim feels productive while bypassing thinking entirely; handwritten outlines force compression, which is why they often test better.
Mapping / mind maps
Radial diagrams shine for seeing relationships and for subjects with heavy structure (biology pathways, history causes). Weak for dense sequential detail, strong as a one-page review artifact you redraw from memory.
Sentence method
Writing every new idea as its own line. Simple and fast for chaotic lectures; produces the most rereading-shaped notes, so it needs the after-step most of all.
The after-step every method skips
Whatever the layout, notes rot unless they become retrieval. The workflow that works: within a day or two, walk your notes and turn the 10–20 things worth keeping into question cards (the full notes-to-cards process). The cue column, map branches, or bullet headers make this conversion nearly mechanical — write the question, hide the answer, schedule it (spacing does the rest). Everything else in the notes remains as reference, which is what notes are actually good at.

Handwriting or laptop?
Handwriting's advantage is forced compression (you can't transcribe, so you summarize). Laptops win on speed and searchability. If you type: paraphrase deliberately, never transcribe — the compression is where encoding happens.
Should I rewrite my notes to study?
Rewriting is rereading with a pen — pleasant, weak (the evidence). Convert to questions instead; same time, several times the retention.
Which method for university lectures?
Cornell for most courses; mapping for relationship-heavy subjects; outline when the lecturer is highly structured. The after-step matters more than the choice.
